Alan Perry has watched Hilton Head Island grow and change for most of his life. His family began spending summers here in the 1960s and made the Island home in 1972. Those years shaped something that still guides him today: progress matters, but so does protecting the character, environment and sense of community that made Hilton Head Island special in the first place.
Today, Alan has the privilege of serving as Mayor of Hilton Head Island, bringing that lifelong perspective to the decisions that will shape the Island’s next generation.
That history is independently reflected in recent local coverage, which describes his family coming here in the 1960s, moving here full-time in 1972, his father’s community involvement, and Alan’s service on the Planning Commission before his election as mayor in November 2022.

Long before he ever considered running for office, Alan Perry was part of this community.
He grew up here. He built relationships here. He watched neighborhoods take shape, businesses grow, families put down roots and generations of residents work to protect an Island unlike anywhere else.
That history gives Alan an appreciation for where Hilton Head has been, but his focus as Mayor is firmly on where it is going.
For Alan, leadership isn’t about having the loudest voice in the room. It’s about listening carefully, asking difficult questions, bringing people together and doing the work required to turn good ideas into responsible action.
There are rarely simple answers to the challenges facing a community like Hilton Head Island.
Growth. Traffic. Housing. Beaches. Stormwater. Public safety. Development. Infrastructure. Preserving our environment while maintaining a healthy local economy.
They require listening, research, collaboration and sometimes difficult decisions. Alan believes that’s exactly what public service requires.
He shows up. He listens. He asks questions. He works with Town Council, professional staff, residents, businesses and community organizations. And when people disagree, he believes the responsibility of leadership is to keep working toward solutions.
